Ninety years ago, travelers heading west on Route 66 pulled off the road here, stepped out of their cars, and felt the cool of the Ozarks settle around them. They stayed.
The Wagon Wheel Motel has been doing that ever since. Built from native Ozark stone in 1936, this hand-laid motor court has outlasted highways, interstates, and decades of trend. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. And it has never once stopped welcoming guests.
The stone buildings, the original wood doors with their glass knobs, the hardwood floors, they are all still here. So is the neon. We've added pillow-top beds, jacuzzis, flat screens, and modern HVAC, but we've been careful to leave the Americana-soul alone.
This is Route 66 as it was meant to be traveled: slowly, with somewhere worth stopping.
